Mount Liebig lies on the western edge of the greater MacDonnell Ranges, some 325km west of Alice Springs. Known locally as Watiyawanu, Mount Liebig is a go-between community for families with connections to Haasts Bluff, Papunya, Kintore and Kiwirrkura. The majority of people living in Mount Liebig are former residents of Papunya or Haasts Bluff.
The community forms part of the Luritja Pintubi Ward of the MacDonnell Regional Council and the majority of its 156 residents identify themselves as Luritja. Other language groups in Watiyawanu include Pintubi, Warlpiri and Arrernte.
Services provided in Mount Liebig by the MacDonnell Regional Council include cemetery maintenance, rubbish collection and tip maintenance, internal roads maintenance, parks and open spaces and sporting grounds.
On behalf of the Northern Territory Government, the Council provides airstrip maintenance as well as Commonwealth Government funded services including children’s services, youth development services and night patrol services. Council is also contracted by Power Water Corporation to maintain the power and water facilities, Australia Post to provide postal delivery services and by Centrelink to provide its services through an agency in its Council office.
Other facilities of the Mount Liebig community include an Aged Care Centre with a public laundry attached, Health Centre, School and Church.
